National selectors declared the Team India squad for the ICC T20 World Cup which is scheduled to be held in September in Sri Lanka. The team was announced by Chief of selection panel Kris Srikkanth in a press conference on Friday. There are not one but four surprise elements that fans will be seeing in the team that has been picked.
The most surprising inclusion is that of Yuvraj Singh, who makes his comeback to the national side after having played the last international tie back in November 2011 against the West Indies. He hasn’t played any form of competitive cricket after having recovered from a rare germ-cell cancer. However, the selectors are of the opinion that he has recovered enough to be included.
We have selected the team which we think can win the T20 World Cup again, Chief selector Kris Srikkanth said in his statement. According to him, if Yuvraj gets going that he is capable of winning the series for the team and he is definitely a great factor in the squad.
Another surprise was Harbhajan Singh. The off-spinner has been struggling for form off-late but the professional selectors have shown faith in him and his experience and have decided upon including him again. The team will now feature 3 spinners- Ravichandran Ashwin, Piyush Chawla and Harbhajan Singh.
Lakshimpathy Balaji has also been included in the 14 man squad that was announced here along with Rohit Sharma, who has been out of form, but has managed to retain his spot.
England will be looking to defend their T20 title which they won 2 years back in the Caribbean. The team is also scheduled to play two T20 matches against New Zealand, at Chennai and Vishakhapatnam, before they leave for Sri Lanka. Selectors also announced the squad for the test series against New Zealand.
